Shopping Really Adds Up!

Well folks it is the week before Christmas and there is only one word to describe it...madness! These kiddos have checked out and are already on break! Last week we began working on adding three and four two-digit numbers. I always like to relate math to the real world so I thought what better way than to go shopping!
After teaching students how to add three and four two-digit numbers, we practiced with a little shopping! I gave my students a "Toy Store Magazine" with different toy options. We then had a sheet that had word problems that said "I went to the store and bought a bouncy ball, baby doll and remote control car. How much did I spend". The students had to look up the prices in their magazine, write a vertical addition sentence and then solve.
After practicing add up what other people bought, it was time for students to do a little shopping of their own. Students got a half sheet of toys for sale at the toy store. Students chose 4 items (could be three) and glued them in their shopping bag.
Students then wrote a vertical addition sentence and solved. This is a really cute, quick, and effective way to see if students really grasp adding four two-digit numbers.
My students took it a step further. They chose four items and we let our friends solve our shopping bag. We put a receipt in the shopping bag that the students totaled themselves. Then they paired up and let their classmates solve. The classmates solved the bag and then checked the receipt to make sure it was correct!
This is such a fun activity with tons of variations! Click and of the images to get it in my TPT store! It comes with all that you see above and more plus all the instructions you need to implement this in your classroom!
